  2. Checkers 1.3 by Magicwand Software

  5. Checkers is a free version of the board game of the same name. You play against the 
  6. computer. You can change the computer's difficulty level.
  7.  
  8. Rules
  9. ------
  10. The object of the game is to take all the opponents pieces, or put him in
  11. a situation where he has no valid move. You can either move diagonally up by one
  12. square at a time, or jump over the opponents piece diagonally to a free square
  13. on the other side (ie. by two squares diagonally), in which case the opponents
  14. piece is removed (taken). 
  15.  
  16. When you reach the top of the board, your piece becomes a king,
  17. and can now move downwards or upwards diagonally. 
  18.  
  19. You Must take an opponents piece if you can. When you move your mouse over a
  20. piece that can be moved, a red box will appear. This can be helpfull to see which
  21. moves are valid at the moment.

  23. For more information on the Rules, press the Rules button in the game.

  25. Buttons
  26. --------
  27. When you start up the game, you will see grey buttons. If the button does not work
  28. for any reason, it's text will be greyed out. It should be obvious what the buttons
  29. do, but here is a list anyway. If you are not sure about a button, press it and see
  30. what happens - it shouldn't be anything bad.
  31. Program options are saved, so next time you run Checkers your old options will be used.
  32.  
  33.     Sound:           This can either be "On", "On (fx only)", or "Off". Press it to cycle
  34.                      through these options. To turn the speech off, use the "fx only"
  35.                      option.
  36.                      If you have no sound card, sound is unavailable or you downloaded 
  37.                      the "no sound" version, this button will be set to "Unavailable".
  38.  
  39.     Your side:       Choose whether you want to be White or Black. 
  40.                      Black always moves first.
  41.  
  42.     Game Difficulty: Change the computer's difficulty level. Press "Ok" when finished.
  43.                      Higher levels will take more computer thinking time,
  44.                      these should be marked "slow" or "very slow".

  50.     Play:            Starts a new game of checkers.

  52.     Exit:            Quits the game and returns to Windows.

  54. During the game, some of the following buttons will be available:

  56.     Set Difficulty:  See "Game Difficulty" above
  57.  
  58.     Move Now:        This button is available only when it is the computer's move and 
  59.                      it is thinking. Press it to stop the computer thinking and make it's
  60.                      move immediately.
  61.  
  62.     Offer Draw:      If it's your turn and you see no way for either side to win, you can 
  63.                      offer to call this game a draw. The computer will consider this 
  64.                      and either accept or reject your offer.
  65.  
  66.     Resign:          Press this button to accept defeat. You will return to the main menu.

  68.     Get a Hint:      This button gives you a hint on what may be a good move for you. The
  69.                      move will be highlighted in white. There is no guarantee that it's
  70.                      your best move, of course.

  72.     Undo Move:       This button takes the game back to before your last move.
  73.                      A useful button if you make a mistake...

  75. Sometimes when the computer has been thinking for several seconds, a progress meter
  76. will appear showing you roughly how far the computer has got. If you get impatient,
  77. you can press "Move Now" and the computer will move quickly. If this happens a lot,
  78. it may be easier to use the "Set Difficulty" button to lower the computer's level.

  83. Pressing Esc (also called Escape) will get you out of what you're doing at the moment.

  110.    DirectX compatible graphics card capable of 640x480 resolution with 256 colours

  121. If you have Windows 95 but don't have DirectX (very unlikely if you play games on your PC)

  126. Checkers may work under Windows NT 4.0. You will need to install Service Pack 6
  127. which supports DirectX.

  129. Installation instructions
  130. --------------------------
  131. Checkers 1.3 is distributed as a self-installing exe. If you are reading
  132. this you have probably installed Checkers already, in which case there's nothing
  133. more to do. If not, double-click on Chkwin13.exe and follow the on-screen instructions.

  135. Uninstalling Checkers
  136. ----------------------
  137. To uninstall Checkers, use the Add/Remove Programs section of the Windows Control Panel,
  138. select Checkers 1.3 and click Add/Remove.
  139.  
  140. You can get to the control panel from My Computer on the desktop, or 
  141. from the Start Menu click Settings then Control Panel.
